Your First Botox Appointment: What to Expect from Consultation to Aftercare
Hi, I’m Nyree Van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM, and the founder of Beauty Energy Exchange Aesthetics and Wellness, offering botox in San Diego, here in beautiful Point Loma, San Diego. If you’ve been thinking about Botox but feel overwhelmed, nervous, or afraid of looking “overdone,” you’re not alone.
I’ve walked this path with countless clients who simply wanted to feel like themselves again—refreshed, not frozen.
This guide is for you: whether you're considering Botox for the first time, or you've been staring at your frown lines in Zoom meetings wondering if it’s time.
I’ll walk you through every part of the journey, so you know exactly what to expect—from the first hello to post-treatment care.
What Is Botox, Really?
Let’s bust a myth: Botox isn’t a filler. It doesn’t plump your face—it relaxes specific muscles to smooth dynamic wrinkles, the kind that come from movement, like frowning, squinting, or raising your brows.
It’s FDA-approved, safe, and when done correctly, it looks natural.

Why People Choose Botox—And Why You Might
Most of my clients come in not because they want to look “done,” but because they’re tired of looking tired. Maybe you’ve heard, “Are you okay?” one too many times.
Or maybe your face doesn’t reflect how energized and confident you actually feel. Botox helps bridge that gap, restoring harmony between how you feel and how you show up in the world.

Common Concerns About Getting Botox
Trust me, I’ve heard it all:
“I don’t want to look frozen.”
“I’m scared it’ll change my face.”
“Is it going to hurt?”
“What if I regret it?”
These are valid fears. At Beauty Energy Exchange, I approach every treatment conservatively. The goal? You, just smoother.
Before You Book: Choosing the Right Provider
Not all injectors are created equal. Please, don’t base your decision on price alone. Look for someone credentialed, with experience, and who listens to your concerns. A good provider won’t rush you—they’ll educate and empower you. That’s exactly what we do at our medspa in Point Loma.

Step One: The Initial Consultation
Your journey starts with a heartfelt conversation. We’ll talk about:
Your concerns and goals
Your facial expressions and anatomy
Any past experiences with injectables
Health history and medication use
This isn’t just a check-the-box chat—it’s a personalized blueprint for your results.

What to Expect During Your Botox Appointment
Here’s what typically happens:
I’ll cleanse your skin.
We’ll map out your injection points.
A few tiny pokes using an ultra-fine needle.
You’re done in under 15 minutes.
Most people say it feels like a quick pinch or bug bite—not pleasant, but not unbearable.
Let’s Talk Dosage and Placement
There’s no one-size-fits-all with Botox. You might need:
10-20 units for frown lines
6-10 units for crow’s feet (each side)
10-15 units for forehead lines
We’ll always start conservatively. It’s easier to add more than to take it back.
How Long Does a Botox Appointment Take?
The actual injections take about 10–15 minutes, but plan for 30–45 minutes so we have time to answer questions, prep your skin, and go over aftercare instructions.
Will It Hurt? (Let’s Be Honest)
Not gonna lie—there’s a pinch. But it’s super quick. Some clients like to ice the area beforehand, and we also offer topical numbing if you’re extra sensitive. You’re tougher than you think!

Aftercare: What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Do
Here’s your Botox aftercare cheat sheet:
Do:
Stay upright for 4 hours.
Use your facial muscles normally.
Gently apply a cold compress if needed.
Don’t:
Rub or massage the area.
Lie down or work out right away.
Take blood thinners unless medically necessary.

How Soon Will You See Results?
Botox isn’t instant. Most clients start seeing results within 3–5 days, with full results at around 10–14 days. Trust the process.
How Long Will Your Botox Last?
On average, Botox lasts 3–4 months. Some clients metabolize it faster, others slower. If it’s your first time, results might not last as long—but they often improve with consistency.
When Should You Book Your Next Appointment?
To maintain your results, I recommend rebooking every 12–16 weeks. We’ll set up a reminder system so you don’t have to keep track.
