Lip Injections in San Diego: How to Prepare, What to Expect, and Aftercare Tips
Hi, I’m Nyree Van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM, and the proud owner of Beauty Energy Exchange Aesthetics and Wellness here in Point Loma, San Diego. If you’ve been thinking about getting lip injections, or if you're already booked and want to make the most of your treatment—I’m here to walk you through what to expect from start to finish.
At BEE Aesthetics, we’re all about enhancing your natural beauty—not masking it. So let’s talk about what it’s like to get lip fillers in San Diego, how to prepare, and the best aftercare practices for beautiful, balanced results.
Why Lip Injections?
Lip injections are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in San Diego, and for good reason. Whether you're looking to add volume, improve symmetry, or smooth out fine lines around the mouth, lip fillers can offer subtle yet powerful changes that help you feel more confident in your skin.
What Makes Our Approach Unique at BEE
We don’t do “cookie-cutter” lips. Every face is unique, and your lips should be, too. Our approach is holistic, intentional, and always focused on keeping your features in harmony. We believe you should still look like YOU—just refreshed, energized, and radiant. See how we achieve that in our before and after gallery.

What Are Lip Injections Made Of?
Lip fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA)—a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps keep skin hydrated and plump. HA fillers are safe, flexible, and reversible.
How to Prepare for Lip Injections
To keep things smooth and comfortable, we recommend avoiding the following for at least 3–5 days before your appointment:
Aspirin
Ibuprofen / NSAIDs (like Advil, Motrin, Aleve)
Fish oil / omega-3 supplements
Turmeric
Vitamin E
Ginkgo biloba
Garlic supplements
Alcohol (avoid for at least 48 hours prior)
These can thin your blood and increase your risk of bruising or swelling. If you're on any prescribed blood thinners, be sure to let us know in advance.
Start taking arnica pellets and bromelain to help minimize bruising.
Skin and Self-Care Tips
Avoid major dental work or facial treatments for two weeks before or after.
Skip anything that might irritate your lips—like waxing, threading, or intense exfoliating.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Treatment
The Consultation
First, we’ll chat. I’ll take time to understand your aesthetic goals and explain your options. We’ll go over your medical history and answer all your questions before we begin. No rush. No pressure.
Numbing and Prep
We use a topical numbing cream to make the treatment more comfortable. Most people say it feels like a pinch or pressure, but nothing unbearable. Do lip fillers hurt? We break it all down honestly here.
The Injections
The actual injecting process takes about 15 minutes. We use fine, precise techniques to ensure even distribution and symmetry. We may massage certain areas gently to shape the filler as it sets.
Aftercare Tips for the Best Results
Right After the Procedure
Expect swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising—this is totally normal.
Apply ice packs (wrapped in a clean cloth) in 10-minute intervals for the first 48 hours.
Avoid touching, massaging, or pressing on your lips—let the filler settle naturally.
Try to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated the first few nights.
What Not to Do
No lipstick, lip balm, or makeup on the treated area for at least 24 hours.
Avoid strenuous workouts, hot yoga, saunas, and steam rooms for 24–48 hours.
Skip alcohol, smoking, and salty foods for the first day to reduce swelling.
No kissing or using straws for 24 hours to prevent unnecessary pressure.
Don’t schedule facials, dental work, or other lip treatments for at least 2 weeks.
The Healing Timeline
Day 1–3: Swelling peaks; lips may feel firm or uneven. Minor bruising is possible.
Day 4–7: Most swelling fades; lips begin to soften and look more natural.
Day 14: Filler has fully settled—this is when final results are best assessed.

Are Lip Injections Painful?
Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but most of our clients describe it as pain free to mildly uncomfortable at most. We use numbing cream, a gentle touch, and top-quality HA fillers to make the experience as smooth as possible.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?
Typically, lip filler results last 6 to 12 months, depending on your metabolism, lifestyle, and filler type. We’ll recommend the right product and schedule a follow-up plan tailored to your needs.
Can I Combine Lip Injections With Other Treatments?
Absolutely. Many of our clients combine lip fillers with wrinkle relaxers like Botox or skin treatments like microneedling for a holistic refresh. We’ll help you create a customized plan that supports your long-term beauty goals.
How to Maintain Your Results
Stay Hydrated
Hydration helps maintain volume and elasticity.
Use SPF Lip Balm
Sun protection is essential for preventing premature breakdown of your filler.
Use Ourself Lipfiller and Lip Conditioner Duo
Schedule Touch-Ups
Depending on your goals, we’ll recommend a touch-up timeline. Most clients return every 6 to 9 months to maintain their desired look.
FAQs
1. How much do lip injections cost in San Diego?
At BEE, pricing depends on the type of filler and how much product is used. Most treatments range from $600-650. Read our full lip injection pricing guide.
2. Can I go back to work the same day?
Yes! Lip injections are a quick, non-surgical treatment. You might experience swelling, but many of our clients go right back to work afterward.
3. Will I look fake or overdone?
Not here. We specialize in natural, personalized results. Our goal is to enhance your lips subtly—not change your face.
4. What if I change my mind?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are reversible. If you’re ever unhappy with your results, we can dissolve the filler safely.
5. Do I need to avoid kissing after lip injections?
Yes—for the first 24 hours. This helps minimize pressure, reduce the risk of infection, and allows the filler to settle properly.
