Combining Botox, Fillers & PDO Threads in Point Loma: What You Should Know

facial balancing San Diego

Quick Answer: Botox, dermal fillers, and PDO threads are different aesthetic treatments that address different concerns. Botox temporarily relaxes selected muscles to soften expression lines. Dermal fillers may restore volume or enhance facial contours. PDO threads may provide a modest lifting effect for certain patients. These treatments can sometimes be combined as part of a personalized facial rejuvenation plan, but not everyone needs multiple procedures. The best approach depends on your anatomy, skin concerns, medical history, and goals.

Hi, I'm Nyree Van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM, founder of Beauty Energy Exchange Medspa in beautiful Point Loma, San Diego.

One of the things I love most about aesthetic medicine is helping people understand what's actually changing in their faces.

Sometimes someone comes in asking for Botox because they feel like they look tired.

Other times, a client wants filler because she's noticing her jawline isn't as defined as it used to be.

And occasionally, someone asks whether PDO threads could give her a little lift without surgery.

Here's what I want you to know:

Botox, fillers, and PDO threads aren't interchangeable treatments. They do different things.

And while combining treatments can sometimes make sense, more isn't always better.

At Beauty Energy Exchange, my goal is to understand your facial anatomy, listen to your concerns, and help you explore options that support natural-looking results.

Let's talk about how these treatments work, when they may complement one another, and what you should know before combining them.

Why Do Some People Combine Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads?

Facial aging is more complex than simply developing wrinkles.

Over time, several changes may occur:

  • Muscle movement: Repeated facial expressions contribute to certain forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet.

  • Facial volume: Changes in fat and other facial structures can affect fullness and contour.

  • Skin elasticity: Collagen and other structural changes can contribute to skin laxity.

  • Facial proportions: Changes in different parts of the face can affect overall balance.

These concerns don't all respond to the same treatment.

For example, Botox may soften certain frown lines, but it won't restore volume in hollow cheeks.

Dermal filler can address selected areas of volume loss, but it doesn't work like Botox to temporarily relax muscles.

PDO threads may provide a modest lifting effect for certain patients, but they aren't a substitute for every type of surgical facelift.

This is why I believe the best treatment plans begin with identifying what's causing the concern.

Sometimes one treatment is enough.

Sometimes a combination may be appropriate.

And sometimes the best choice is to wait or consider another approach entirely.

Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads: What's the Difference?

Let's look at the three treatments individually before discussing how they might work together.

Botox and Wrinkle Relaxers: For Certain Expression Lines

Botox Cosmetic is a prescription neuromodulator, commonly called a wrinkle relaxer.

It temporarily reduces activity in selected muscles.

This can soften the appearance of certain expression lines, including:

  • Forehead lines

  • Frown lines between the eyebrows

  • Crow's feet

At Beauty Energy Exchange, we offer Botox and other wrinkle relaxers, including Dysport, Jeuveau, and Daxxify.

Each product has its own dosing system, clinical considerations, and approved uses.

Other aesthetic applications may be discussed depending on the product and patient, although some uses are off-label.

What I want clients to understand: Botox is most useful when the concern involves certain muscle-related expression lines.

It isn't designed to replace lost facial volume or correct significant loose skin.

Dermal Fillers: For Selected Volume and Contour Concerns

Dermal fillers are injectable products used to address specific volume or contour concerns.

Depending on the product and treatment area, fillers may be used to enhance features such as:

  • Cheeks

  • Lips

  • Chin

  • Jawline

  • Certain facial folds

Hyaluronic acid fillers are one commonly used category.

These products can provide a visible change in volume or contour relatively quickly, although swelling and settling may affect the initial appearance.

But filler isn't automatically the answer whenever someone notices sagging or facial aging.

Adding volume to the wrong area—or using more filler than appropriate—can create an outcome that doesn't align with the patient's goals.

That's why I evaluate facial proportions and the source of the concern before discussing filler.

Sculptra: A Collagen-Stimulating Injectable

Sculptra is a little different from traditional hyaluronic acid fillers.

It's an injectable poly-L-lactic acid product that works in part by stimulating collagen production over time.

Instead of relying on an immediate gel-based volumizing effect, Sculptra's cosmetic improvements develop gradually.

It may be considered for selected facial wrinkles and volume-related concerns, depending on the approved indication and individual assessment.

Sculptra generally involves a treatment plan rather than assuming one injection will achieve the entire result.

And because its effects develop gradually, patience and realistic expectations are important.

At Beauty Energy Exchange, I also offer Radiesse, another injectable biostimulator with different properties and clinical considerations.

These products aren't interchangeable with Botox, and they're not appropriate for every treatment area.

PDO Threads: For Selected Lifting and Support Goals

PDO stands for polydioxanone, a material used in certain absorbable medical sutures.

In aesthetic treatments, PDO threads may be placed beneath the skin to provide support and, depending on the thread type and technique, a modest lifting effect.

Some patients explore threads for concerns involving:

  • Early jowling

  • Selected areas of lower-face laxity

  • Certain facial contour changes

  • Mild tissue descent

PDO threads may also trigger some tissue remodeling as they are absorbed.

However, the degree of lifting, duration of improvement, and overall response can vary substantially.

PDO threads don't replace a surgical facelift, and they aren't the right choice for every type or degree of skin laxity.

I want clients to understand those limitations before considering treatment.

Can Botox and Dermal Fillers Be Used Together?

Yes. Botox and dermal fillers may be included in the same overall aesthetic treatment plan when there are appropriate reasons to use both.

For example, someone might be concerned about two separate issues:

  • Expression lines between the eyebrows

  • Loss of volume in the cheeks

Botox may be considered for the expression lines.

An appropriate dermal filler may be considered for the volume concern.

Those are different problems requiring different approaches.

Using both treatments doesn't automatically make the result better.

It simply means there may be more than one concern worth addressing.

Does Botox Help Fillers Last Longer?

You may have heard that Botox helps filler last longer by reducing facial movement.

Although muscle activity can be relevant to aesthetic treatment planning, Botox doesn't guarantee longer-lasting filler results.

Filler longevity depends on the product, location, individual response, and other factors.

I wouldn't recommend adding Botox solely because someone promises it will make filler last significantly longer.

The decision should be based on your treatment goals and clinical assessment.

Can You Combine Botox With PDO Threads?

In selected cases, a provider may consider wrinkle relaxers and PDO threads as part of a broader facial rejuvenation plan.

But there's no universal rule that someone should receive Botox before a thread lift.

The treatment sequence depends on factors such as:

  • Which areas are being treated

  • Your anatomy

  • The specific products and techniques

  • Healing and recovery considerations

  • Potential risks

  • Your desired result

For example, someone whose main concern is forehead expression lines may benefit from a discussion about Botox.

Someone concerned about early jowling may be more interested in whether a thread procedure or another skin-lifting option is appropriate.

And some people have both concerns.

That doesn't mean every patient needs both treatments.

Will PDO Threads Make Botox Results Better?

Not necessarily.

PDO threads and Botox work differently.

Threads don't replace the wrinkle-relaxing effects of Botox, and Botox doesn't guarantee a stronger or longer-lasting thread lift.

A good combination plan considers whether each procedure contributes something useful to the patient's goals.

If it doesn't, there's no reason to add it.

Is It Better to Combine Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads or Get One Treatment at a Time?

This depends entirely on the individual.

I often prefer to think about aesthetic treatments as a plan rather than a collection of procedures.

For some patients, one treatment may address their primary concern.

For others, a staged approach may be appropriate.

Why Staging Treatments Can Be Helpful

Scheduling treatments separately may allow time to:

  • Evaluate the response to the first procedure

  • Assess swelling or healing

  • Reconsider whether additional treatment is needed

  • Manage recovery around work or social events

  • Spread expenses over time

Staging isn't a guarantee of better results or fewer complications, but it may be useful in certain situations.

Is There a Standard Order for Combination Treatments?

No.

You may see online advice suggesting that everyone should receive Botox first, filler second, and threads last.

I don't believe in using that sequence automatically.

Your treatment order should depend on your clinical assessment and the procedures being considered.

Sometimes we may decide to address one concern first and revisit the others later.

Sometimes combining procedures may be reasonable.

And sometimes we may decide against a particular treatment altogether.

The right plan is the one that's appropriate for you—not a preset formula.

Who Might Be a Good Candidate for Combination Aesthetic Treatments?

Combination treatments may be worth discussing if you're experiencing more than one type of facial concern.

For example, you might notice:

  • Expression lines that bother you

  • Changes in cheek fullness

  • Reduced facial definition

  • Mild skin laxity

  • Several changes that one treatment alone may not address

However, noticing these concerns doesn't automatically make you a candidate for every procedure.

A medical consultation is important to review your goals, facial anatomy, medications, health history, and treatment suitability.

Some patients may have conditions or circumstances that make certain procedures inappropriate.

Others may be better served by skincare, a different nonsurgical procedure, or a surgical consultation.

At Beauty Energy Exchange, I want to help you understand those choices without pressure.

Can Combination Treatments Still Look Natural?

Yes, natural-looking improvement is a reasonable goal, although no provider can guarantee a particular appearance.

For me, natural results begin with respecting your facial anatomy.

I don't believe every line needs to disappear.

I don't believe every cheek needs more volume.

And I don't believe every jawline concern requires lifting or filler.

The goal is to understand your face as a whole.

Facial Balance Matters

When we look at facial rejuvenation, we're considering how different features relate to one another.

Changes in the cheeks, chin, jawline, eyes, and mouth can influence overall facial balance.

That's why treating one isolated feature without considering the surrounding anatomy isn't always the best approach.

Conservative Treatment Can Be Appropriate

For certain patients, a conservative approach may support their goal of subtle improvement.

However, less product isn't automatically safer or better.

Appropriate treatment depends on the procedure, anatomy, and medical assessment.

You Should Still Feel Like Yourself

This is especially important to me.

I don't want my clients to feel that aging means they need to change every feature of their face.

I want them to understand their options and make decisions that feel right for them.

What Are the Risks of Combining Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads?

This is one of the most important parts of any combination treatment discussion.

Each procedure has its own potential side effects, risks, limitations, and recovery requirements.

Combining treatments may also make it more complicated to identify which procedure is responsible for a particular symptom or result.

Botox Risks

Possible side effects include temporary bruising, swelling, headache, unwanted muscle weakness, and changes in eyelid or eyebrow position.

Botulinum toxin products also carry warnings about possible spread of toxin effects, which can rarely cause serious symptoms.

Difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing requires immediate medical attention.

Dermal Filler Risks

Dermal fillers can cause swelling, bruising, tenderness, lumps, infection, and other complications.

One particularly important risk is accidental injection into a blood vessel.

Although uncommon, this can cause serious injury, including tissue damage, vision loss, or stroke.

Sudden severe pain, unusual skin discoloration, vision changes, or stroke-like symptoms during or after filler treatment require immediate medical attention.

Some hyaluronic acid fillers may be reduced or dissolved with hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate, but that doesn't guarantee every complication can be reversed.

PDO Thread Risks

Possible complications from PDO threads include bruising, swelling, discomfort, asymmetry, skin dimpling, infection, thread visibility or extrusion, and unsatisfactory lifting.

Thread procedures require careful patient selection and realistic expectations.

A thread lift also doesn't eliminate the possibility of needing additional treatment or another approach later.

Why a Thorough Consultation Matters

Before any treatment, your provider should review your medical history, explain relevant risks, discuss alternatives, and make sure you understand what the procedure may and may not accomplish.

If you're considering multiple treatments, each one deserves its own benefit-risk discussion.

More procedures mean more decisions—not an automatic improvement in results.

How Long Do Combination Treatment Results Last?

There isn't one timeline that applies to all three treatments.

Botox and Other Wrinkle Relaxers

For many cosmetic patients, Botox effects last approximately three to four months.

Individual responses vary.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Some hyaluronic acid filler effects can last several months to a year or longer, depending on the product, treatment area, and individual factors.

The visible result and the time filler material remains present aren't always identical.

Sculptra

Sculptra works gradually, and some patients receive a series of treatments.

For its studied and approved uses, improvements may last up to approximately two years, although results vary.

PDO Threads

PDO thread results are more variable.

Some lifting may be apparent shortly after treatment, while the final appearance depends on healing and tissue response.

The duration and degree of improvement vary based on thread type, technique, anatomy, and other factors.

I wouldn't promise a particular number of months of lifting without assessing the individual patient and treatment.

How Much Do Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads Cost in San Diego?

The cost depends on the products used, the recommended treatment areas, the number of sessions, and whether procedures are performed individually or as part of a staged plan.

At Beauty Energy Exchange Medspa, we publish starting prices for:

  • Botox and other wrinkle relaxers

  • Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers

  • Sculptra and Radiesse

  • MINT PDO Thread Lifts

  • Other aesthetic treatments

Because pricing may change, I recommend visiting our current med spa pricing page for the latest information.

You don't need to know which treatments you want before scheduling a consultation.

We'll discuss your goals, review the options that may be appropriate, and explain the estimated cost of any proposed treatment plan.

Beauty Energy Exchange requires a $50 consultation booking fee, which may be applied toward a treatment or retail product purchased at our med spa.

I believe cost should be part of an honest conversation—not a surprise.

What Does Recovery Look Like After Combination Treatments?

Recovery depends on which procedures you receive.

Botox typically involves relatively little downtime, although temporary injection-site symptoms can occur.

Dermal fillers may cause swelling, bruising, or tenderness, and the initial appearance may change as these effects resolve.

PDO thread procedures may involve additional discomfort, swelling, bruising, or activity restrictions during healing.

If you're combining treatments, your provider should give instructions tailored to the procedures performed.

Planning Around Special Events

If you have a wedding, vacation, photoshoot, or important event coming up, tell your provider before scheduling.

I don't recommend assuming you'll look exactly as expected the next day.

Swelling, bruising, healing, and treatment response can vary.

An appropriate schedule should allow time for recovery and reassessment.

Aftercare Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Instructions for Botox aren't automatically the same as those for fillers or PDO threads.

Your provider may recommend temporary activity restrictions or other precautions based on your procedure.

For Botox-specific guidance, read my article on Botox aftercare in San Diego.

For fillers and threads, follow the instructions provided for those specific treatments.

My Approach to Facial Balancing at Beauty Energy Exchange

I believe some of the most important work in aesthetic medicine happens before a single injection is performed.

It happens when we listen.

When we examine what's actually causing a concern.

When we discuss realistic expectations.

And when we decide whether a treatment is even necessary.

My background as a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife, along with continuing education in facial anatomy and aesthetic procedures, informs how I approach individualized treatment planning.

But just as important, I want my clients to feel comfortable speaking openly about their concerns.

If you're worried about looking overfilled, tell me.

If you're nervous about threads, let's discuss the risks and alternatives.

If you're interested in Botox but don't want to lose your natural expressions, that's part of the conversation too.

I don't believe that good aesthetic medicine is about doing the most.

It's about understanding what makes sense for each individual.

Frequently Asked Questions About Combining Botox, Fillers, and PDO Threads

Can you combine Botox, fillers, and PDO threads?

Yes, these treatments may be included in the same overall aesthetic plan for appropriately selected patients. However, each procedure addresses different concerns, and combining them isn't necessary for everyone. Your provider should evaluate your anatomy, goals, medical history, and treatment risks before recommending a plan.

Should you get Botox before filler or PDO threads?

There isn't one required order for every patient. The appropriate sequence depends on the treatment areas, products, clinical assessment, recovery needs, and individual goals. Some procedures may be staged to allow time for healing and evaluation.

Do Botox and fillers work better together?

They can complement each other when a patient has both muscle-related expression lines and volume-related concerns. However, using both doesn't automatically produce better results. The benefit depends on whether each treatment addresses a specific concern.

Can PDO threads replace dermal fillers?

Not always. PDO threads and fillers work differently. Threads may provide modest lifting or support in selected areas, while fillers address certain volume and contour concerns. One treatment isn't automatically a substitute for the other.

Will combining aesthetic treatments make me look overdone?

Not necessarily, but natural-looking results can't be guaranteed. Your outcome depends on your anatomy, the procedures selected, treatment planning, technique, and individual response. Discuss your preferences with your provider before proceeding.

How long do Botox, filler, and PDO thread results last?

Botox effects commonly last approximately three to four months. Filler longevity depends on the product and treatment area. PDO thread results vary based on the technique, thread type, healing, and individual response. Your provider should explain the expected duration of each proposed treatment separately.

Can you get Botox, filler, and PDO threads at the same appointment?

Some procedures may be combined during one visit, but that isn't appropriate for every patient or treatment plan. Your provider should consider safety, treatment areas, healing requirements, and whether separating the procedures would be preferable.

How much do combination treatments cost in Point Loma?

The total cost depends on which treatments are recommended, the products used, the amount required, and the number of appointments. Beauty Energy Exchange publishes current starting prices at https://www.beautyenergyexchange.com/pricing. A $50 consultation booking fee may be applied toward a treatment or retail product.

Are Botox, fillers, and PDO threads safe?

Each procedure has potential benefits, side effects, contraindications, and risks. Botox, dermal fillers, and PDO threads should be evaluated individually rather than considered risk-free when combined. A qualified medical provider should explain the relevant risks, alternatives, and expected outcomes before treatment.

Where can I get Botox, fillers, or PDO threads in Point Loma?

Beauty Energy Exchange Medspa offers consultations for Botox, dermal fillers, and PDO thread treatments at 1050 Rosecrans Street, Suite 8, San Diego, CA 92106. Nyree Van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM, develops individualized treatment recommendations based on each patient's anatomy, medical history, and aesthetic goals.

Final Thoughts: Natural Results Begin With the Right Plan

If you've been considering Botox, fillers, or PDO threads, I hope this article helps you understand that these treatments aren't meant to accomplish the same thing.

Botox may soften certain expression lines.

Fillers may address selected volume and contour concerns.

PDO threads may offer modest lifting or support for certain patients.

And sometimes a combination approach may make sense.

But the goal should never be to use every treatment simply because it's available.

I want you to feel comfortable with your face, confident in your decisions, and informed about what each procedure can realistically achieve.

Sometimes the right plan involves one treatment.

Sometimes it involves several treatments over time.

And sometimes it involves deciding not to proceed.

That's what personalized aesthetic medicine means to me.

If you're interested in exploring your options, I'd love to welcome you to Beauty Energy Exchange Medspa in Point Loma.
