Addressing Common Concerns: What San Diegans Should Know Before Getting Lip Fillers

where people in San Diego go for lip fillers

Hi there! I’m Nyree Van Maarseveen, WHNP, CNM, and the founder of Beauty Energy Exchange Aesthetics and Wellness here in beautiful Point Loma, San Diego. I get a lot of questions from people who are curious about lip fillers—many of them excited, but understandably a bit nervous, too. Whether you’re thinking about plumping your pout for the first time or just looking to refresh your look, it’s normal to have concerns.

Let me walk you through everything you should know before getting lip injections in San Diego—from what to expect, how to choose the right injector, potential side effects, and what recovery looks like. I’ll even share a few personal insights and testimonials from our amazing clients right here in San Diego.

What Are Lip Fillers, Really?

Lip fillers are injectable treatments made primarily of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps retain moisture and volume. They’re used to add volume, define the lip shape, and smooth out fine lines around the mouth.

Think of them as a little hydration boost with the power to give you that fuller, more youthful look.

Why People in San Diego Are Choosing Lip Fillers

Boosting Confidence and Embracing Natural Beauty

In a city as vibrant and sunny as San Diego, we all want to feel confident and radiant—inside and out. Natural Lip fillers can enhance your natural features, giving you that subtle "something" without making it obvious you had anything done.

Fast, Non-Surgical Results

Another reason lip fillers are so popular? The procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and you can get back to your day almost immediately.

Common Concerns Before Getting Lip Fillers

Let’s talk about the real stuff—the hesitations many of our clients share with me during their consultations.

Will It Look Natural?

This is by far the most common worry I hear. My approach is always to enhance your existing beauty—not change your face. We take a conservative, artful approach to injectables to ensure your results are natural and balanced. You’ll still look like you—just a more refreshed version.

Is It Going to Hurt?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most of our clients say the treatment feels like a quick pinch. We use a topical numbing cream before we begin, and offer a complimentary dental block if requested, also, most modern fillers include lidocaine to reduce discomfort during the injection.

What Are the Risks or Side Effects?

While complications are rare, it’s important to know what’s normal and what’s not. Here are some common side effects you might experience:

  • Swelling (usually peaks 24–48 hours after treatment)

  • Mild bruising at the injection site

  • Tenderness or firmness in the lips

These usually resolve within a few days. More serious complications, like vascular occlusion, are extremely rare but why choosing the right injector matters so much (more on that below).

Choosing a Qualified Injector: Why It Matters

This might be the single most important decision you’ll make when considering the best lip filler in San Diego.

Not All Injectors Are Equal

You want someone with extensive training in facial anatomy, an aesthetic eye, and a background in medicine. As a Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse Midwife, my education and clinical training help me prioritize your safety while achieving the look you want.

What to Ask Your Injector

Don’t be shy—ask these questions during your consultation:

  • What is your medical background and training in aesthetics?

  • How often do you perform lip filler treatments?

  • Can I see before and after photos of your actual clients?

  • What products do you use and why?

The Lip Filler Appointment: What to Expect

Step 1: The Consultation

We start every treatment with a free consultation where we chat about your goals, review your medical history, and go over what’s realistic for your lips. I want you to feel comfortable and confident before we even pick up a syringe.

Step 2: Numbing

We apply a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Most clients describe the feeling as pressure or pinching rather than sharp pain.

Step 3: The Injection

The actual injecting takes about 10–20 minutes. I use precise techniques and focus on symmetry and natural curves.

Step 4: Aftercare

After your session, we’ll give you simple aftercare instructions. You can expect some swelling, but it’s totally manageable—and often kind of fun to see your lips evolve over a few days.

What to Expect During Recovery

Day 1–2: Swelling Peaks

Don’t panic—this is totally normal. Some people even experience “sausage lips” for a day or two. Ice helps, and it settles down quickly.

Day 3–5: Bruising Fades

Any bruising that shows up will start fading by now. You can safely wear lip balm or gloss at this point, just avoid heavy pressure.

Day 7–10: Final Results

Most swelling is gone by day 7, and you’ll be able to see your true results. At this point, we can assess if a touch-up is needed, but for most people, one session is perfect.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Typically, lip fillers last between 6 to 12 months, depending on the product used and your individual metabolism. We’ll recommend a maintenance schedule if you want to keep your results looking fresh year-round.
